  • One of the year’s most important political gatherings takes place this week in Little Rock – the annual convention of the Arkansas Municipal League.
  • All the major hotels in Little Rock are filled to capacity. More than 1,300 mayors, city officials and city council members from all over Arkansas are meeting to work on policy and strategy.
  • As a former mayor, I fully appreciate the hard work the Municipal League does for cities and towns across the state.
  • The Municipal League has the expertise to help local officials with any number of issues that affect small towns, from police retirement systems to industrial development bonds to financing sewer and water systems.
  • But the Municipal League contributes a whole lot more than just helping with the details of local government. Over the years, it has been a strong voice for local control.
  • As a former mayor of West Memphis, and as a current member of the state legislature, I can tell you that special interests are always trying to take away local control.
  • They lobby the legislature for laws to consolidate the decision-making process in Little Rock.
  • That way, they can more easily exert their influence on a host of issues ranging from property rights and zoning ordinances to whether or not a local community can regulate night clubs and liquor stores.
  • Every community in Arkansas is unique. Rarely is there is a “one size fits all” solution that can be imposed from Little Rock, which would be effective for every city and town in the state.
  • The Municipal League works to make sure that cities and towns have the authority they need, to best represent the interests of their citizens.
  • I’m confident that this year’s convention will be successful and productive.
  • From the Capitol, it is always my greatest honor and most sincere privilege to serve you as your state Senator. This is Keith Ingram.
