  • From the beautiful and quiet hallways of your historic state Capitol, this is Senator Keith Ingram.
  • The legislature officially completed the 2017 regular session when we adjourned sine die on April 24.
  • The governor can call us into special session if the need arises. If no emergencies come up, legislators will not meet again in regular session until February of 2020, when the next fiscal session convenes.
  • The end of the session does not signal an end to legislative business. It just means that our duties will take a different form.
  • Rather than enacting new laws, lawmakers will meet regularly at the Capitol to make sure that all new laws are carried out according to legislative intent.
  • Legislative committees will monitor state government spending, so that appropriations are spent efficiently and transparently.
  • Legislators will pay close attention to the hiring, promotion and firing of state agency staff, to make sure that personnel decisions are in line with the policies approved by the legislature.
  • Legislative auditors will review every dollar spent by government agencies, institutions of higher education and public schools. And believe it or not, although we’ve just finished a legislative session, we’ll begin preparations for the next session.
  • It’s too soon to say exactly which issues will come up in the legislative session of 2021. But it’s highly likely that environmental regulations will need to be amended. Education standards will need updating.
  • Sentencing laws will undergo changes, so that prison officials can manage inmate populations. Lawmakers will draft bills that affect health insurance and the affordability of medical care.
  • We’ll continue to enhance workforce training, and we’ll continue our ongoing efforts to increase the number of college graduates in Arkansas.
  • I will continue to keep you informed of all the latest developments in state government.
  • From the Capitol, it is always my great honor and sincere privilege to serve you as your state Senator. This is Keith Ingram.
