  • The Senate met to elect its leadership and for members to select their committee assignments, and I’m proud to report that I will serve on two important committees during the next regular session.
  • I’ll be a member of the Revenue and Taxation Committee, where several far-reaching tax cut measures will be referred. The governor and the Task Force on Tax Reform have both proposed income tax cuts, especially for people in the top brackets.
  • Arkansas must avoid the mistakes made by legislators in Kansas and Oklahoma, where they became so enamored of cutting taxes they crippled their ability to provide essential services. In both states, funding of education suffered.
  • I’m encouraged that our new President Pro Tem, Senator Jim Hendren of Gravette, has said that we need to avoid making the mistakes that legislators made in Oklahoma and Kansas. Everyone loves tax cuts, but they must be fiscally responsible.
  • My other committee assignment will be the City, County and Local Affairs Committee. As a former mayor of West Memphis, I have a special interest in municipal issues.
  • Because of a recently enacted change in Senate rules, the committee will also consider legislation affecting alcohol and firearms.
