  • The political ads on TV and radio will finally come to an end after voters go to the polls on November 6.
  • Then we can concentrate on getting things done, when the legislature convenes in regular session in January.
  • Already, lawmakers are laying the groundwork on a number of issues, from tax cuts to pay raises for teachers and state troopers.
  • School safety will be among the topics at the top of our agenda. A task force of educators, parents and law enforcement has presented a package of recommendations to the governor and the legislature.
  • The group began looking for ways we could improve school safety after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that resulted in the deaths of 17 people.
  • The group’s most high-profile recommendation was to place an armed guard at school whenever students are present.
  • Another proposal would require schools to let counselors do their jobs. The task force learned that in many school districts, counselors fill in at a number of odd jobs to help out when other personnel is absent. They do paperwork and fill out the endless reports that schools are required to submit.
  • As a consequence, they don’t spend as much time with students as they should. They run the risk of not noticing the red flags that at risk youths often send out. Those red flags include threats of suicide and threats of committing violence.
  • The sooner school personnel learn of this type of behavior, the sooner then can get help for the troubled adolescent.
  • When it comes to school safety, the best way to save lives is to plan ahead.
  • It is always my deep honor and sincere privilege to serve you as your state Senator. This is Keith Ingram.
