  • One of the assignments that keeps me busy is my position on the Legislative Auditing Committee. The auditors on the committee staff are some of the most capable certified public accountants in Arkansas.
  • I know that doesn’t sound exciting, but their work is important. Every year they make more than 1,000 financial reports and audits of state and local governments, including all the school districts in Arkansas.
  • Their audits ensure that financial transactions are transparent and honest. Occasionally they find evidence of mishandling of public funds, and their audits are vital in the recovery of lost or stolen funds.
  • Last year, auditors learned that the director of the state’s Department of Information Systems had a conflict of interest in the awarding of about $8 million in computer contracts. He resigned after it was disclosed that he had a personal relationship with the person who was awarded the contracts.
  • Legislative auditors began a thorough audit of the finances of the Earle School District, after its fiscal problems caused it to be taken over by the state Education Department. They make recommendations so that the bookkeepers know how to follow standard accounting practices.
  • As far as Arkansas taxpayers are concerned, the important thing is that a team of experienced and dedicated auditors is working to ensure that your dollars are spent properly. At every level of government, every dollar of tax revenue is accounted for.
