December 21, 2017- Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.

  • During the 2017 regular session, the legislature enacted tax relief that will save low-income families more than $50 million a year when it takes effect in 2019.
  • Anyone whose yearly income is less than $4,300 will not have to pay any state income taxes at all. Any individual who earns less than $21,000 a year will pay less in taxes.
  • More than 1.3 million Arkansas taxpayers will get a tax reduction next year, and 120,000 Arkansans will not owe any state income taxes at all.
  • The $50 million in tax savings will flow directly into the economy, because those families will likely spend most of it to buy groceries, clothing, housing and other necessities.
  • The legislature also eliminated income taxes for retired veterans. About 29,000 Arkansas veterans served in the military long enough to qualify for retirement benefits. They will no longer have to pay any state income taxes at all on those benefits.
  • Also during the legislative session, we approved Act 50 to reduce a waiting list for people with developmental disabilities who want home services.
  • Those people with developmental disabilities will get assistance that allows them to live at home, rather than in an institution.
  • The legislature also approved paid maternity for state employees, and a new funding formula for higher education that will encourage institutions to retain students and help them earn a degree.
