October 5, 2017- Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.

  • In two months, a task force on tax reform will issue a preliminary report on changes to the state’s tax structure. This legislature created the panel earlier this year, and so far its work has been under the radar. That’s mainly because the public’s attention has focused on other issues, such a criminal justice, highway construction and education.
  • However, as a member of the task force I can assure you that before all is said and done, Arkansas citizens will be paying close attention to the recommendations of the tax committee. Its mission is to examine the state’s overall tax structure, with an eye towards making it more fair. Tax fairness is essential in order to give Arkansas businesses a competitive edge in the world marketplace.
  • In the past two legislative sessions we have lowered income taxes for veterans, middle class families and low-income wage earners. We also lowered capital gains taxes, which are claimed predominately by people in upper-income tax brackets. Since 2015, the legislature has approved total savings for Arkansas taxpayers of more than $175 million a year.
  • It’s too soon to predict what changes are in store when the legislature convenes in regular session in 2019. But if you pay attention to the work of the tax reform and relief task force, you’ll get a pretty clear idea of what to expect. I’ll keep you informed.
