June 15, 2017- Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.

  • The Highway Commission is moving forward with a plan that allows Arkansas voters to decide whether they support additional funding for highway improvements. By a unanimous 5-to-0 vote, the Commission has begun the process of preparing a major highway program, with a funding package to pay for it.
  • Highway officials will work with business leaders, trucking companies, contractors and local economic development teams. They hope to finalize the details by October, so that the measure can be on the ballot in November of 2018.
  • Anyone who has driven through the interchange connecting Interstate 40 and Interstate 55 knows that the repairs and the disruptions they cause seem to go on forever. As soon as one project is finished, it’s already time to start a new one. East Arkansas is a transportation crossroads, and has some of the busiest stretches of highway in the country, especially for heavy trucks.
  • If we don’t commit to long-term solutions, we will forever be playing catch-up. That means navigating dangerous construction zones lined with orange barrels. It also means playing second fiddle when we compete for industries that create well paid jobs.
  • Because of our centralized location, eastern Arkansas has a competitive edge when it comes to geography. It makes sense that we take advantage of our location by making our highways world class in quality. As the highway plan develops, I will keep you fully informed.
