May 18, 2017- Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.

  • There is good news to report from the state’s child welfare office. Since last September the state has recruited more than 1,200 foster families.
This has helped stabilize the growing number of Arkansas children who are in need of placement, foster care or other types of services.
  • The governor and the legislature have made it a priority to improve the operations of the state Division of Children and Family Services. Beginning about two years ago, we have witnessed an alarming increase in the number of vulnerable children in families needing help of some sort. In 2015, for the first time more than 4,000 Arkansas children were admitted into the child welfare system. Over the course of 2016, the number continued to grow until it exceeded 5,000.
  • The governor proposed adding 200 employees to the Children and Family Services Division, to supplement the 552 workers already there. The legislature supported his plan by approving an increase of $118 million a year in the Division’s budget.
  • The Division will be able to reduce the average caseload of employees who investigate allegations of abuse and neglect. The bottom line is that they will be able to more quickly locate vulnerable children and them in a safe place.
