  • Once again, the governor’s budget proposal fails to address the critical long-term needs of the Arkansas Highway Department.
  • He presented a balanced budget plan to the legislature last week, and it would dedicate less than $16 million for highway construction. When you consider the cost of highway maintenance these days, that amount is so little that it’s almost embarrassing.
  • Worse yet, it is merely a stop-gap measure, because it is one-time money that would come from this year’s surplus. That means highway officials cannot count on receiving a similar amount next year, which means they cannot finalize long-range projects.
  • Our highway needs are so critical that we cannot afford to waste time with band-aid measures. We need a transportation program that has a permanent funding source, so we can lock down construction schedules with highway contractors.
  • Transportation could be one of our strongest assets when it comes to recruiting industry and creating jobs. That’s the main reason I oppose the governor’s hap-hazard method of highway funding.
  • Our highways deserve better than table scraps and leftovers.
