  • The deadline for applying for Academic Challenge Scholarships is June 15, so please don’t delay in filling out the necessary paperwork. It’s fairly easy to apply for the scholarships, which are funded by the Arkansas lottery. Search for the state’s Higher Education Department web page by typing in
  • To qualify, you have to have scored a 19 on the ACT college entrance exam. Once you’re in college, you have to maintain a 2.5 grade point average. This year the legislature changed the law so that, for the first time, graduate students can receive the scholarships.
  • The scholarships are structured to provide a strong incentive for students to complete their freshman year and stay on course towards earning a degree. The first year amount is $1,000. If you’re a student at a two-year college you receive $3,000 your second year. If you’re enrolled in a four-year university and maintain your grades, you receive $4,000 in both your sophomore and your junior year. As a senior you receive $5,000.
  • Every year more than 30,000 lottery scholarships are awarded. They can be combined with the new grants created by the legislature in the recent session. They’re called ARFuture grants and they will cover tuition and fees for students who major in science, technology, engineering and math. The deadline for applying for an ARFuture grant is July 1. The details are on the same web page as the Academic Challenge Scholarships.
