March 23, 2017- Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.
In this week’s report:
- As we approach what is expected to be the final week of the 2017 session, we’re close to finalizing budgets for public schools, colleges and universities, prisons, and Medicaid.
- For the past three legislative sessions there have been heated disputes about funding an expansion of Medicaid, even though it has helped almost 300,000 people afford health insurance. It has been a financial lifesaver for hospitals because their cost of unreimbursed care has gone down dramatically. It has been a literal lifesaver for thousands of Arkansans who can now afford to go to the doctor when they get sick.
- There will be more battles over Medicaid before the 2017 session is over, and it is expected that the governor will call a special session later this year to specifically deal with Medicaid.
- I’ve consistently supported Medicaid, which helps families pay for medical care when a loved one has to live in a nursing home, or has a developmental disability and needs specialized treatment. It also provides a subsidy for low-income families who have no other way to pay for medical care. It’s the right thing to do from a humanitarian perspective. It’s also the smart thing to do from a practical and financial perspective.
