March 9, 2017- Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.
In this week’s report:
- Two of the ethics bills I’ve co-sponsored have gone through the legislative process and are now on the governor’s desk, awaiting his signature.
- Elected officials cannot accept payments or any other benefits for performing their official duties. Currently, that prohibition kicks on at the time the elected official takes the oath of office. My bill makes the prohibition take effect when a person is elected, appointed or otherwise designated to hold a public office, even though they have not yet officially occupied the position.
- The other bill I sponsored will allow people to file civil lawsuits against judges who have been found guilty of bribery.
Existing state law has a judicial immunity provision, which makes sense. If you go to trial, you have the right to appeal. Our court system could not function if judges were constantly being sued by people who disagree with their rulings.
- Unfortunately, in Arkansas we have experienced a case in which the judge admitted that he accepted a bribe in return for intentionally reducing the damages awarded to a family that had won a lawsuit.
