February 23, 2017– Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.
In this week’s report:
- In every legislative session, health care issues take up much of our attention. One of the high profile measures that we’ve passed is a new telemedicine law. The bill allows physicians to take advantage of computer and video technology, which will expand access to medical care in isolated areas of Arkansas where there are shortages of doctors and specialists.
- Another health care bill will make anti-opioid medications more available. Because of widespread abuse, opioids are now some of the most dangerous drugs on the market. The bill allows pharmacists to dispense drugs that reverse the effects of opioids such as heroin, methadone, morphine, opium, codeine, or hydrocodone. The pharmacist would then have to notify the person’s doctor.
- On a more joyful note, we have passed and the governor has signed legislation that grants up to four weeks of maternity leave to state employees. They can take their leave within the first 12 weeks after the birth or adoption of a child. They will draw maternity leave from a bank of catastrophic leave donated by fellow employees.
