February 16, 2017– Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.

In this week’s report:

  • I’ve learned from reliable sources that the Tennessee Department of Transportation has postponed its plans to close the I-55 bridge for an additional 9 months or maybe even as much as a year.
  • As you recall, Tennessee officials planned to close the old bridge while they worked on a new interchange at Crump Boulevard in Memphis. I wasn’t the only on who thought this was a bad idea. I was joined by other elected officials, leaders of the business community, and hundreds of Mid-South residents who wanted to put a stop to this ill conceived plan.
  • For one thing, the initial plan failed to include an economic impact study. When we pressured them to conduct a study, it predicted a significant negative impact on local commerce.
  • I’m convinced there are other ways to fix the problem at the Crump interchange while also keeping the bridge open. According to people I talk with, those alternative methods are economically feasible and they would not have as much of a devastating impact on local businesses as closing the old bridge.
