February 2, 2017– Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 91st General Assembly.
In this week’s report:
- The legislature has turned its focus to the other major tax cut bill of the session, a $13-million income tax repeal for military veterans. The bill exempts military retirement pensions from state income taxes.
- Currently, only the first $6,000 of veterans’ retirement is exempt from the state income tax. It will benefit about 29,000 Arkansas veterans, those who served at least 20 years and qualify for military retirement.
- Looming on the horizon is a controversy over bills to change the medical marijuana amendment, which was approved by Arkansas voters last November. One bill would postpone its effective date until marijuana is legalized by the federal government. Another would prohibit the smoking of medical marijuana.
- A third bill would prohibit retail outlets from owning a cultivation facility. This contradicts specific language in the amendment passed by voters, which says that a dispensary may grow up to 50 mature plants.
