September 22, 2016 – Senator Keith Ingram audio report of news from the 90th General Assembly.

In this week’s report:

  • Between 10 and 20 percent of the population suffers from dyslexia, a learning disability caused by faulty neurological transmissions in the brain
  • Failure to diagnose and treat it in young children can have devastating consequences. Diagnosing and treating in early grades is much cheaper and more effective than providing remedial reading classes to teenagers and adults
  • I was proud to co-sponsor Act 1294 of 2013, which requires schools to screen all students in kindergarten through second grade to determine if they lack the decoding skills necessary to learn our alphabet. If a child has academic problems due to dyslexia, the school will notify their parents and take appropriate steps to help that child function in the classroom
